Lung Cancer 2009: Imaging in Lung Cancer Detection and Treatment
Denise R. Aberle, M.D., professor of radiology and bioengineering; vice-chair of research, radiological sciences and Martin Allen-Auerbach, M.D., assistant professor of pharmacology and director of nuclear medicine at Santa Monica-UCLA Hospital, discuss state-of-the art imaging in the detection and treatment of lung cancer.
Imaging-based screening for lung cancer has been controversial with both promise and limitations; the National Cancer Institute is currently sponsoring the National Lung Screening Trial comparing chest X-rays to computed tomography (CT). Drs. Aberle and Allen-Auerbach discuss the role of non-invasive PET/CT for monitoring anti-cancer therapy after the diagnosis using tracers to follow cancer metabolism as well as the implications of this imaging technique for monitoring treatments and improving therapy outcomes.
