Charley Cover at the 2006 Paddle for Cancer |
Each person has a unique way of coping with the news of a cancer diagnosis in the family. Many feel anger, fear or sadness. Charley Cover, however, felt convicted to do his part in the fight against cancer after his own sister, Carolyn, was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. With the goal of inspiring people to donate to cancer research and spreading awareness of the disease, Charley paddleboarded 60 miles over the course of three days, from Jalama to Rincon, and raised more than $19,000 in 2006.
Support the fight against cancer with Charley as he paddles again, this time circumnavigating Catalina Island by starting and ending at Isthmus Harbor, to raise money for breast cancer research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC). Charley will complete the 47-mile paddle over three days with Steve Faber, Ole Barre, Joe Melville, Jana Melville, Bowen Ota, Mike Stenkilsson, Matt Ellis, Matt Stevens, Jason Lusk, Dean Lakoff, Eric Brinkman, Steve Orloff, Bret Belknap and Dylan Henderson. Support boat captains Chuck Cover, Dan Brinkman, Bob Davis, Holly Scott and their crew John Faber and Katie Scott will be along for the ride. You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to support their efforts as well as life-saving cancer research at JCCC.
You are also welcome to join the team at the Isthmus on Sunday, August 16 at 12 pm to cheer them on during the final leg of their journey.
