Lymphoma Treatment in 2014

Lymphoma represents a collection of blood cancers that arise from the lymphoid cells of the immune system. An estimated 79,000 people will be diagnosed with lymphoma in 2013, the majority of these will be non-Hodgkin lymphomas and approximately 10 percent will be Hodgkin lymphomas. There are over 50 different types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The field of lymphoma research is rapidly evolving as medical professionals learn more about the biology of each type of lymphoma, and several new, exciting therapies are currently in clinical trials. The different types of lymphoma, the general approach to treatment and the new targeted therapies that have recently been reported or are currently in clinical trials will be discussed. Also highlighted are the available treatment options and potential new therapies for lymphoma.

Sarah M. Larson, M.D., UCLA Clinical Instructor and medical oncologist specializes in the treatment of lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Her research interests include the identification of novel pathways and therapeutics for patients with lymphoma and multiple myeloma. She has also worked on the use of chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) for the treatment of patients with lymphoma.
