Scientific Interest(s):
Dr. Jennifer Malin's research focuses on developing the tools to measure the quality of cancer care. She is interested in learning why cancer patients do not always get the best available treatment and what can be done to improve the quality of cancer care.
Malin is currently working on developing a national cancer monitoring system in the VA. In addition, she is collaborating with other VA investigators on a study of the quality of supportive and end of life care in the VA. She is an investigator in CanCORS, a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored study that is prospectively studying the patterns of care and outcomes of a population-based cohort of patients newly diagnosed with lung and colorectal cancer, and co-principal investigator of the RAND/UCLA site. From 2005-2007, Malin was Director of Global Health Economics at Amgen where her research focused on the effectiveness and pharmacoeconomics of supportive care for patients undergoing cancer therapy. Prior to joining Amgen, she was co-principal investigator for the National Initiative on Cancer Care Quality, a prototype for measuring quality for cancer patients sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She has helped lead efforts to develop quality measures for common malignancies, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer, and consulted for the Institute of Medicine and the NCI regarding quality measurement for cancer patients.
