Scientific Interest(s):

Dr. William McCarthy's research includes studies of tobacco use and tobacco cessation patterns among adults and school age children, as well as diet and exercise patterns among African-American women and low-income children. Current research includes the evaluation of California's SB 19 Pupil Nutrition Act, the evaluation of the tobacco prevention education efforts in California's public schools, statewide surveillance of tobacco use among residents of Asian/Indian ancestry and a pilot program to assist Korean-American smokers in quitting the tobacco habit. McCarthy's current research also involves examining adolescent tobacco use differences among Asian ethnic subgroups and among Latino ethnic subgroups. Pending research includes examining the impact of education about cancer-related legal information on quality of life in breast cancer patients and research on building health promotion capacity within community health clinics. Past research projects studied tobacco use among Asian populations, smoking among low-income, pregnant women and a series of studies regarding mentholated cigarettes.
