Scientific Interest(s):

The major focus of Dr. Sanjay Mallya’s research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of oral neoplastic development and progression. Specifically, he is studying the role of the cyclin D1 oncogene in this process. Cyclin D1, a key regulator of the G1-S phase of the cell cycle is deregulated in a vast majority of human oral cancers. Using transgenic animal models of oral premalignancy, he is studying the interaction between cyclin D1 deregulation and environmental factors in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma, as well as the molecular and genetic events that occur during the multi-step progression of these neoplasms. His laboratory is also studying the role of the vitamin D receptor in regulation of oral keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation and its implications for oral carcinogenesis.
