Scientific Interest(s):

Dr. Atsushi (Austin) Nakano's research is focused on the heart's immunity to cancer. At present, his lab is investigating the link between the heart's resistance to developing cancer, the regenerative properties of its tissues and how balance is achieved between morphogenesis and embryonic cardiogenesis functioning during the dynamic process of the organ's formation. Nakano's key ongoing study is to understand what makes cardiomyocytes resistant to any mitotic stimuli through the analysis of the embryonic heart (that is still mitotically active yet otherwise similar to postnatal cardiomyocytes) and the atrial myocardium where benign tumors can develop.
