Scientific Interest(s):

Dr. Michael Kuo’s lab is uniquely situated in both the Departments of Radiology and Pathology, reflecting its cross-disciplinary nature. It brings together a scientific team focused on understanding, characterizing and ultimately modulating the phenotypic diversity present in cancer by working at the intersection of high throughput cellular and molecular profiling, targeted therapeutics, noninvasive imaging and image-guided tissue acquisition. The lab leverages the strengths and infrastructure of the UCLA Rad-Path program, where Kuo is the director, which is a multi-disciplinary clinical oncology program that brings together, under a single roof, a unique cross-section of diagnostic experts, clinical oncologists, cutting edge imaging and molecular diagnostics platforms and a unique targeted image-guided tissue biopsy tissue bank. This work draws upon a unique complement of disciplines including computer science, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, clinical oncology, diagnostic imaging, molecular pathology and interventional radiology.

The goals of the lab include systematic and comprehensive elucidation of cancers in terms of: (1) spatially and temporally diverse DNA, RNA and metabolic alterations, and cellular populations, (2) functional responses in model systems using chemical and genomics approaches, and (3) understanding the bidirectional relationships between tissue, cellular and molecular cancer biology and their dynamic behaviors captured by advanced non-invasive imaging methods (radiogenomics).

By merging these powerful fields Kuo and his colleagues hope to provide new insights into possible new paradigms for addressing the detection, characterization and treatment of cancer.
