Scientific Interest(s):

Dr. Dino Di Carlo’s research focuses on engineering of microfluidic and nanoparticle systems for the analysis of single cells for both improving cell-based diagnostics and automating cell biology. His group takes advantage of inertial fluid dynamic effects in particular to engineer simple systems for translational applications. Projects include:
  • measuring the mechanical properties of single cells at thousands of cells per second for label-free cancer screening
  • an automated cellular sample preparation instrument called the centrifuge-on-a-chip to prepare fluid samples from patients for improved cytological and molecular diagnostics
  • nanoparticle-based manipulation of intracellular environments using patterned magnetic substrates to study how local controlled signals contribute to cell response in normal and diseased cells.
