JCCC and BSCRC Research Seminar Featuring Dr. James Bieker
EKLF/KLF1 and the Hematology of Red Blood Cells
1/10/2013
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Free
CNSI Auditorium
Los Angeles, California 90095

Presented by:
James J. Bieker, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of Developmental and Regenerative Biology
Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Dr. Bieker's research is focused on the transcriptional regulation of red cell-specific gene expression. His lab is investigating how molecular events confer the ability to express lineage-specific genes upon an initially uncommitted, pluripotent hematopoietic stem cell, which remaisn a major question in cell differentiation. Bieker's team also explores the use of an immortalized erythroid cell line as a means to isolate genes that may be important for erythroid function, which has allowed them to identify a novel, erythroid-specific gene, which was named EKLF (erythroid Kruppel-like factor).
