Patricia Ganz, Director, Prevention and Control Research

Patricia GanzPatricia A. Ganz, M.D., is a medical oncologist who has spent the past 20 years doing systematic research on the health-related quality of life impact of cancer and its treatment. She currently holds an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship, and is a professor in the UCLA Schools of Medicine and Public Health. She serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. She has also been actively involved in measurement of quality of life endpoints in clinical trials, with leadership roles in the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP). She has completed several studies that have examined quality of life in breast cancer survivors, and recently received continued funding from the National Cancer Institute to develop and evaluate an intervention for breast cancer patients who have completed their treatments and are "Preparing for Survivorship."

In other studies funded by the Komen Foundation and the Department of Defense, Ganz is examining the impact of treatments on reproductive health, cardiovascular risk, and osteoporosis in women who were 50 years or younger when they received treatment for breast cancer. Her newest research initiative, funded by the National Cancer Institute, is focusing on increasing physician and patient awareness of the value of colorectal cancer screening, enhancing the opportunities for early detection, prevention and cure of this potentially fatal cancer.

In 1999, Ganz was awarded the prestigious American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship. She was also honored with the Komen Foundation Professor of Survivorship Award that same year.
