Four Leading-edge Scientists Garner Prostate Cancer Foundation Grants

Four researchers from UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center were awarded grants from the Prostate Cancer Foundation as part of the Competitive Awards Program.

UCLA recipients included Dr. David Heber, chief of the Center for Human Nutrition; Michael Jung, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry; Lily Wu, an associate professor of urology; and Owen Witte, a professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics and director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine at UCLA.

The four UCLA scientists were among 63 research investigators awarded grants to aggressively search for better and more effective treatments for prostate cancer. In all, the foundation awarded $6.1 million dollars.

The grants provide financial support to high-impact research projects with the greatest potential to improve survival and reduce side effects and death for men with advanced prostate cancer, Prostate Cancer Foundation officials said. They are given to projects in a variety of areas including biomarkers, genetics and genomics, nutrition, cancer immunotherapy, new drug discovery, and survivorship.

UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center comprises more than 240 researchers and clinicians engaged in disease research, prevention, detection, control, treatment and education. One of the nation's largest comprehensive cancer centers, the Jonsson center is dedicated to promoting research and translating basic science into leading-edge clinical studies. In July 2006, the Jonsson Cancer Center was named the best cancer center in California by U.S. News & World Report, a ranking it has held for seven consecutive years.
