Bone, joint and muscle cancer can sometimes be associated with known risk factors for the disease. Many risk factors are modifiable, though not all can be avoided, such as your age, genetics, gender and family history.
- Radiation therapy. External radiation cancer therapies are the most well-established risk factor for soft tissue sarcomas. The risk appears to be related to the dose of radiation. To limit this risk, radiation treatment for cancer is planned to ensure that the greatest amount of radiation is delivered to diseased tissue while surrounding healthy tissue is protected as much as possible.
- Avoid exposure to industrial chemicals. Occupational exposure from working with vinyl chloride, arsenic and herbicides.
- Arsenic. Have your drinking water tested, and/or drink bottled water if you think that your water is contaminated with arsenic.
