Scientific Interest(s):

Dr. Osman Galal is a professor of community health sciences in the School of Public Health and director of the school's International Health Program. Galal is a pediatrician with a Ph.D. from the Institute of Child Health, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He has extensive research and background in child health in developing countries. He also has extensive experience in graduate and postgraduate training, having trained more than 30 doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars from many developing countries in the field of public health. Galal teaches graduate courses on International Health with emphasis on methodologies for promoting health among minorities and underserved populations. His research has focused in several areas of public health, including functional effects of chronic, mild-to-moderate malnutrition in children, and cognitive development and performance in malnourished children. He has published more than 70 papers. He currently has active research projects in the field of breast cancer among Muslim women in Southern California.
