Cardiovascular Health After Cancer
The life expectancy of cancer survivors has significantly increased over the past few decades due to the incredible advances in cancer treatments and radical new developments in anti-cancer therapies. While these treatment modalities have prolonged survival significantly, cancer survivors that have had certain types of chemotherapy and radiation are not only at increased long-term risk for recurrent malignancies, but also for long-term cardiac effects. The known long-term cardiac effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment and the critical importance of maintenance of a healthy lifestyle and diet for cancer survivors are discussed. Also highlighted is the need for continued cardiac screening in special populations of cancer survivors that have undergone treatments with certain chemotherapy and radiation treatments that put them at higher risk of cardiovascular complications later in life.
